Abstract

Chronic pain management remains a significant clinical challenge, with conventional pharmacological agents such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and opioids associated with substantial adverse effects including gastrointestinal toxicity, renal impairment, and risk of dependence. This review examines the analgesic properties of two widely studied botanical agents—Aloe barbadensis Miller (Aloe vera) and Zingiber officinale (ginger)—evaluating their efficacy in rodent pain models and elucidating their underlying mechanisms of action. Both extracts demonstrate significant antinociceptive activity through central and peripheral pathways, including modulation of opioid receptors, monoaminergic systems, and inflammatory mediators. The evidence suggests these herbal agents offer promising alternatives or adjuncts to conventional analgesics, with favorable safety profiles that warrant further clinical investigation.
